About The Author

A. Lewis Ford

Hugh D. Young

Hugh D. Young

Dr. Hugh D. Young (1930—2013) was an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his graduate and undergraduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. Hugh joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Mark Zemansky and Francis Sears for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role in Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics.

Roger A. Freedman

Dr. Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. Roger came to UCSB in 1981 after 3 years of research and teaching at the University of Washington.

At UCSB, Professor Freedman has taught in both the College of Creative Studies and the Department of Physics. He has published research in elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has worked to make physics lectures a more interactive experience through the use of classroom response systems and pre-lecture videos.

University Physics for the JEE, Volume I, 13th Edition, (PDF) is an Indian adaptation of the international bestseller ‘University Physics with Modern Physics by Young Freedman and Ford‘.

University Physics 13e continues to set the benchmark for clarity and rigor combined with effective teaching and research-based innovation.

University Physics is known for its uniquely deep, broad, and thoughtful set of worked examples– crucial tools for building both physical understanding and problem-solving skills. The updated 13th Edition revises all the Examples and Problem-Solving Strategies to be more brief and direct while keeping the Twelfth Edition’s consistent, structured approach and a strong emphasis on modeling in addition to math. To help students tackle challenges in addition to routine problems, the 13th Edition adds Bridging Problems to every chapter, which poses a difficult, multiconcept problem and provides a skeleton solution guide in the form of hints and questions.

The text’s rich problem sets–developed and refined for more than six decades–are upgraded to include larger numbers of problems that are biomedically oriented or need calculus.
