About The Author

Hugh Coolican

Hugh Coolican

Hugh Coolican is the ‘guru’ of A-level and undergraduate Research Methods, as the author of the classic book Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology, which is in its 7th edition. He is in ‘phased retirement’ but cannot quite let go so works two days a week in Coventry, teaching Philosophical Psychology and Research Methods. Hugh is also an Assistant Examiner for the International Baccalaureate.

This Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology 6th edition (PDF) has been fully updated and revised, providing college students with the most comprehensive and readable survey of statistical concepts, research methods and procedures in psychology today. Assuming no prior knowledge, this bestselling textbook takes you through every stage of your research project giving advice on conducting and planning studies, analyzing data and writing up reports. The ebook provides clear coverage of statistical procedures and includes everything needed from nominal level tests to multiple regression, multi-factorial ANOVA designs, and log-linear analysis. It features detailed and illustrated SPSS instructions for all these procedures eliminating the need for an extra SPSS textbook.

New features in the 6th edition include: “Tricky bits” – in-depth notes on the things that psychology students typically have problems with, including common misunderstandings and likely mistakes. Improved coverage of qualitative analysis and methods, plus updates to Grounded Theory, Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, and Discourse Analysis. A recently published full journal article using Thematic Analysis, illustrating how articles appear in print. Discussion of contemporary issues and debates, including recent coverage of journals’ reluctance to publish replication of studies. Fully updated online links, offering even more information and useful resources, especially for statistics. Every chapter contains key terms, a glossary, and newly integrated exercises, ensuring that key concepts are understood. A companion website (www.routledge.com/cw/coolican) provides additional exercises, revision flashcards, links to further reading and data for use with SPSS.

Reviews

The ebook presents a significant number of valid and practical examples of the use of statistics in psychology. However, the author also presents the material using language that transcends to other fields as well. The emphasis on exploration of data as a precursor to the application of inferential statistical methods is extremely useful for psychology students and researchers alike.” – Adriana Espinosa, City College New York, USA

I recommend this ebook as essential reading at undergraduate level: the depth and breadth of the coverage is excellent, and the explanations given, and examples used, are accessible, very clear and accurate. The latest edition also includes ‘tricky bits’ at the end of each chapter – things that university students repeatedly have problems with and which are also relevant to improving their marks.” – David Tyfa, University of Huddersfield, UK

The new 6th edition of this ebook is very well-written and covers a range of material in an informative yet easily accessible, reader-friendly manner. It is very impressive not only in its scope but also in the thoroughness with which its topics are covered. The ebook is an extremely useful and versatile text that essentially covers 4 topics ‘for the price of one’ and is essential reading for psychology students at all levels from 1st-year undergraduate to Master’s.” – Kevin Thomas, Bournemouth University, UK
