About The Author

Hugh Coolican

Hugh Coolican

Hugh Coolican is the ‘guru’ of A-level and undergraduate Research Methods, as the author of the classic book Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology, which is in its 7th edition. He is in ‘phased retirement’ but cannot quite let go so works two days a week in Coventry, teaching Philosophical Psychology and Research Methods. Hugh is also an Assistant Examiner for the International Baccalaureate.

The ebook titled Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology, 8th Edition (PDF), offers students a comprehensive and easily understandable overview of the research methods and statistical concepts used in psychology today. This bestselling text by Coolican is designed to cater to all levels of knowledge, guiding college students through each step of their research projects. From planning and conducting studies, to analyzing data and writing reports, this textbook covers both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It also pays special attention to diversity, with a significant section dedicated to cross-cultural psychology methods and issues. Building on its reputation, the book integrates qualitative elements into its methods chapters and provides two separate chapters on qualitative methods. It offers a clear and comprehensive coverage of experimental, interviewing, and observational methods, as well as psychological testing and a wide range of statistical procedures. These procedures include nominal-level tests, ordinal and interval two-condition tests, simple and multi-factorial ANOVA designs, correlation, multiple regression, log linear analysis, factor analysis, and, new to this edition, logistic regression.

The PDF ebook provides detailed and illustrated SPSS instructions for various procedures, eliminating the need for an extra SPSS textbook. New 8th Edition features include: logistic regression, expanded coverage of report writing guidelines, and concepts illustrated with up-to-date research examples. Each chapter contains a glossary, key terms, and integrated exercises. The book is enhanced with an updated Instructor and Student Resource website, offering interactive multiple-choice questions, practical exercises, additional reading materials, and test banks for each chapter.
